That’s right. We’re going to keep it going until it’s gone!

(I will be using the above pic again, in a future post.)
To me, Persephone is Non-Being, but Hades is the force behind whatever we conceive Non-Being to be. In a way, I feel like Persephone is the face of the Unseen, that which gives form to the formless while being *almost* formless herself…it makes sense, in a way. Persephone is popularly, at least in modern times, convinced of as being reflective, containing all potentials and changeable, very water like. It makes sense for a being who reflects the Great Primordial Nothing, in which all things are contained. Persephone, in the language of the Tao, is “the Mother of 10,000 things”. In that case, Hades is the “nameless beginning of Heaven and Earth”, the invisible, the Void beyond void. Persephone, to me, much in the way that Nuit is viewed by Thelemites, is the Ain or Ain Sof…no-thing-ness, but conceptualized. Obviously, Hades would represent a conception of a non-conception, but I see him as being the Non-Being beyond Non-Being just as Persephone is the Being of Non-Being. This doesn’t make one greater than the other: it’s the holy, sacred marriage of water and fire, Yin and Yang, Tao and Teh. Siva and Shakti.
Again, this will be UPG heavy.
Hades’ name literally means, “Unseen” (which would interestingly make “House of Hades” be “House of the Unseen”…but anyway…). The Gematria for “Unseen” in Hebrew is 520, and divided by 10 (the number of pomegranates on the Kabbalistic Tree), it is reduced to 52.
520 means “kosher” or “legal, legitimate, ritually clean” as well as “tears”. It is also the enumeration of “Kappa Phi”, symbolic of Kteis and Phallus. It is also 465 + 55, which is the union of the upright (14) and inverse (41) pentagrams plus NShIQH (465, said nesh-ik-ay, a kiss or a sweet mouth…perhaps a reference to a kind of Logos?). This is according to my partner, the mad and brilliant Kabbalist (with whom things are better, YAY!) Also relevant is the stuff for 52, which is “ben” (son), a title of Tifaret, which is the secret name of the world of Assiah. It is also Yod Heh Vau Heh spelled in full. It is also the gematria for “beast” and “Elihu” (He is my God), as well as “From All, Among All”, “to desire”, “a husband’s brother” and “a dog”.
Gematria for “Hades”, in Greek, is 222 (I could be wrong, my math skills are deplorable). It is 2 x 111, which is Chokmah multiplied by “The Intelligence of the Sun”, “The Magic sum of the Magic Square of the Sun”, “He is One God”, “Ruin, destruction, sudden death”, “AUM”, “Thick Darkness” and “Mad”.
It is also 6 x 37 (Yechida), the part of the soul attributed to Kether, and in this form it’s a blend between what is aforementioned and Tifaret. My partner calls it a meeting between Chokmah and Binah, though he honestly got into things that were over my head and while it makes intuitive sense, it doesn’t make intellectual sense (something about Kether, Chokmah, Binah and Tifaret playing off of Yechida). (I can see it if we do it as 2 x 3x 37.) 222 itself means “to make heavy”, “whiteness” and “I will chase”.
I feel like this reveals a lot about Hades’ nature. In his form as the Unseen and the Primordial and the true spirit of Nothingness, I find reflection of that in the references to Yod Heh Vau Heh, He is One God, etc. Legal as well as ritually clean bring to mind not only Hades’ ability to give absolute law in his kingdom (and perhaps beyond it), but also for the absolute purity (as in, whole essense) of reality. Thick Darkness also hints at his nature in this aspect, as well as his aspect as King of the Underworld, which ruin, destruction and death refer to…as well as “tears”.
Hades ability to personify to me “the Black Sun”, hidden knowledge or quite simply nigredo (which, in my opinion, is a nearly constant feature of the Underworld simply because of its nature…even Rubedo down below is corrosive). I’ve already gotten into Persephone as the Lady of Nigredo by her virtue of embodying water and dissolution…gentle. However, Hades is fire and destruction, and is nigredo in it’s most potent, most violent sense. Nigris Solis is also a symbol of hidden knowledge or “treasure” which fits Hades’ reputation as the god of wealth, the keeper of the treasures of the earth.
Speaking of Persephone…there are many allusions to their union in the gematria. The union of the upright and inverse pentagrams (above and below) sealed with a kiss reminds me strongly of their union.
And as for the “desire” and “I will chase”…what person does not chase their own death, at one time or another? *smile*

oh wow, i LOVE this! love the gematria (i find gematria gorgeous if WAYYYY over my head), love the kabbalistic interplay, lovelovelove the insights and ‘glimmers and sparkles’ as daniel matt describes the skimming and diving into knowledge.
you bring very visceral, instinctive, epiphanal quality of the Mysteries into Word better than just about anyone i know.

I will admit using Zeus Kthonios for Hades makes me twitch. Zeus does have his kthonic “aspect” but it does not make him the same as Hades….
With all due respect, it’s honestly a name I associate more with Hades than Zeus, while I am aware that Zeus also has the name and has his Underworld aspects. It’s very often I’ve seen this name used to refer to Hades euphemistically, in various situations, even as seen in his Orphic hymn: http://www.theoi.com/Khthonios/HaidesGod.html.
Though, I agree, Zeus and Hades are not the same, nor would I say such. Their personalities and functions are very different, though I’ve seen them get very close to each other in synchronization.
